Rural Rotation Opportunities
Who and What
Tennessee Rural Partnership (TRP) facilitates opportunities for medical residents in Tennessee primary care residency training programs to participate in rotations at a variety of practice sites across the state. Rotations are generally for a four-week period but may be adjusted to accommodate educational or continuity clinic requirements. All primary care disciplines may apply: family medicine, internal medicine, pediatrics, internal medicine/pediatrics and obstetrics/gynecology. Occasionally, rotations also may be approved for certain non-primary care specialties where shortages exist in Tennessee (example: general surgery).
Out of state medical residents who hold an unrestricted license to practice medicine in any state may apply for a rural rotation if they meet other requirements for a Single Purpose License (SLP) in Tennessee. Information on the SLP is available upon request.
Rotations are available in Community Health Centers, Rural Health Clinics and private practice settings in all three Divisions of the state.
Financial support for travel related expenses is available. TRP will assist in helping to locate suitable housing if required during the rotation.
When and How to Apply
We prefer that the application be completed at least two months prior to the request rotation.
TRP staff will work with residents and their program leadership to find opportunities that fit within the curricular needs of their specialty and are consistent with their individual institutional and accreditation requirements.
Each resident requesting a rotation must complete a Rural Rotation Application. Your Residency Program Director and Designated Institutional Official (DIO) must approve your rotation. Directions for providing PD and DIO approval and documentation of liability coverage, health insurance and applicable licensure requirements (or licensure exemption) will be e-mailed to you in a confirmation e-mail.
